During the 86th National Book Week that was celebrated every November, the Regional Office XII launched a Book Donation Drive entitled “Aklat mo, Talino ko. Libro mo Kaalam ko” . This program aims to provide educational materials and references for Persons Deprived of Liberty (PDL) undergoing Alternative Learning System (ALS) inside jails.
General Santos City Jail Male Dormitory under the leadership of its Jail Warden, JSUPT METZ MELITON PLACENCIA actively participated in the book campaign drive and put up a drop box to one of the leading malls in the city, which is the SM Mall of Gensan. All the personnel were enjoined to participate and donate their preloved books as well. Eventually, the books from different donators filled the new mini library of General Santos City Jail Male Dormitory. What was once a dilapidated old library was turned into a conducive and comfortable reading nook not just for ALS Learners but also to all PDL who are interested to read and learn.
Last 17 February 2021, Regional Office XII conducted the search for best mini library as well as the simultaneous cutting of ribbon to all mini libraries of the different jails region wide. Out of the fifteen jails, General Santos City Jail Male Dorm’s mini library emerged as the Best Mini Library and was chosen as the most liked photo in the social media platform, which is Facebook.
As of this day, General Santos City Jail MD have one hundred forty eight (148) ALS Learners, which can benefit the book donations in our mini library. This kind of programs in jail is very beneficial to the continuous learning of our PDL while confinement.
